Welcome to my first blog post! I am excited to share with you all a list of affordable cruelty free makeup brands that are sold at accessible stores such as Target, Walmart, Rite-Aid, Walgreen’s, Ulta and more.
Whenever the discussion of using makeup that is not tested on animals comes about, I always hear one of two things.
- How do I know if a brand is cruelty free?
- Isn’t cruelty free makeup expensive?
It can be tough deciphering which brands test on animals and which brands do not. When I first ventured into the cruelty free lifestyle, I spent tons of time sifting through the makeup aisles trying to find a leaping bunny approved logo or some sort of “not tested on animals” stamp on the back of products or googling which brands were cruelty free.
The best advice I can give to someone starting out on a cruelty free journey is to do solid research. There is a lot of outdated/misleading information on the internet. It is important to double check (even triple check) any facts or statements concerning brands that claim to be “cruelty free”. A good example is MAC cosmetics. While they state on their website they are “against” animal testing and do not require their products to be tested in the United States, they continue to sell their products in China. China has a strict law on requiring all cosmetics to be tested on animals in order to be sold in the mainland. A quick fact: products that are made in China are not required to be tested, only products sold.
When exploring the makeup aisle at your favorite store, I would suggest checking labels for an approved cruelty free symbol or referencing popular cruelty free sites such as Logical Harmony and Cruelty Free Kitty. I’ve combined a list of cruelty free brands that are available at drugstores and will not break the bank. Cruelty free makeup ranges from low end to high end but can definitely be affordable! E.L.F. is a great start and offers products starting at $1. Stores such as Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx also offer great discounts on drugstore and prestige cruelty free makeup brands!
As I continue to find more affordable brands that do not test on animals, I will make sure to update the list as frequently as possible. If you know of any great brands, please feel free to share in the comments. Hopefully this list will make cruelty free shopping much easier next time you’re in need of some new makeup!
